Synthetic Marijuana (AKA K2/Spice) a Legal Replacement for Marijuana?

Apparently the latest "drug" going around in the US & Canada is a legal replacement for Marijuana referred to as "K2" or "Spice" (or "Scary Spice" by some Anti-Drug groups).

Essentially what K2 is (as per Wikipedia - Spice Drug), is:

Spice is a drug invented by Christopher Burmeister and has been sold in smartshops in Europe, Canada and other parts of the world since around 2002, purportedly as an incense, as well as over the Internet as an "herbal smoking blend". Even though the manufacturer officially warns against human ingestion of Spice, it is usually smoked for its cannabis-like effects which are believed to be caused by a mixture of synthetic cannabinoid drugs.

Spice was claimed by the manufacturers to contain a mixture of traditionally used medicinal herbs, each of which supposedly produces mild effects with the overall blend resulting in the cannabis-like intoxication produced by the product.
I found out about K2 from a story on CNN.com today.. Here it is:

Synthetic marijuana a growing trend among teens, authorities say

Manufactured in Asia and sold online or in local stores, K2 and similar substances are marketed as herbal incense.

Sold in various flavors in 3-gram bags, the product consists of herbs that are sprayed with synthetic substances that mimic THC, the high-causing natural chemical found in marijuana.
And, here are the apparent dangers of this synthetic marjiuana as per the Georgia Poison Center (from the CNN story):

"Our biggest concern is that this particular chemical is likely manufactured in a dorm-room setting. And these dorm-room scientists are not going to be exhibiting a lot of quality assurance techniques," says Dr. Gaylord Lopez, a toxicologist and head of the Georgia Poison Center.

As a result, there's a potential for users to inhale contaminants along with the substance they think they're smoking, Lopez said, which may be a contributing factor in the adverse symptoms some of its users have been experiencing.
And here are the dangers as per the DEA (from the CNN Story):

"Synthetic drugs and herbal drug products like Spice and K2 are not made in a controlled environment and thus you are playing Russian roulette when it comes to these types of products," said Dawn Dearden, a spokeswoman for the DEA, which first began receiving reports about abuse of the substance last year.

According to Dearden, additional side effects can include panic attacks, hallucinations, delusions, vomiting, increased agitation and dilated pupils.
You know, people are aware that Marijuana, Crack, Cocaine, Heroin, Ecstasy, Speed, Meth and a whole bunch of other illicit drugs are made in a "dorm-room setting" and have no "quality assurance", yet they continue to buy it in huge numbers across the world... I don't know how telling them that this is the case with K2/Spice, is going to make it any less attractive to drug-users (who want to get around the whole illegal aspect of using drugs)...

Now, I can understand teenagers using this as a way to get around marijuana being illegal and them being too young to go out and grab some beers...  I don't support or condone it, I just understand it...

To me, the scary thing about this is that since it is legal and not labelled a controlled substance, any child can go into a store that sells it and can buy it no questions asked.. That's a definite problem here. The fact that adults are buying it is irrelevant to me, as adults can make their own decisions...

PS:  If you've tried this K2/Spice before, please feel free to comment anonymously and let us know what you thought of it... Also, if you know any places that sell it in Toronto, that would be some good information to have here as well..  (I searched and couldn't find any legitimate leads online...)

  1. Any idea of the price?
If its cheaper than real marijuana, another problem will be marijuana dealers pedaling this chemical laced substance (although legal) instead of the naturally grown stuff.

    1. It is cheaper. You get 1.5 times as much with 20$ than you do with marijuana

  2. I have smoked a variant of this called spicy green, you can easily find it on ebay but it is also sold in smokeshops around my town. It is very potent, much more than marijuana. You can take 2 or 3 hits of it and you'll feel really high, like smoking 1-2 joints of chronic (good grade weed). The price from what I have bought is $25 a gram and $55 for three grams, which is from a store. Policies are usually 18 and up for purchase, like salvia.

  4. I am a long time cannabis smoker and I was surprised by the effects of K2. Although I still prefer cannabis, K2 did leave me feeling a high similar to marijuana. I bought a 3 gram bag of it at a smoke shop for $35.

  10. If you're buying the authentic stuff, it's more potent than weed. Gives a nice high. It's a shame they're moving so quick on banning it.

  12. It's important to keep in mind that authentic k2 is actually more potent than marijuana. This has been dubbed 'fake weed', but you shouldn't hit it the same, especially if you have low tolerance to begin with.

  13. While i've never smoked k2 i have tried a legal varient called creeper and have smoked weed. While i do think that legal is better because the consequences concerning jail time are less severe, the bad part is the legal shit hurts your body alot more than weed. I would rather risk getting caught then smoke the legal varients because they can cause you to get very sick.

  14. Steer clear of all the blueberry, cotton candy, peach crap. There are actually only 8 authentic K2 blends. Ultra, Blonde, Summit, Solid Sex, Orisha, Thai Dream, Amazonian Shelter, and Sky.

  15. I've smoked quite an amount of dro in my day, and I'll always prefer it to fake bake. But when you have a drug test coming up and still crave that high, it's alright. It'll leave you feeling really nice, but in all honesty, it can have extremely adverse effects from extended use. If they'd legalize the naturally grown cannabis, we wouldn't have to worry about deadly chemicals mixed with cooking herbs being sold to children. For someone looking for a clean record, smoke fake bake. If you have access to the real stuff and aren't getting tested, though, definitely stick to it.

  16. Isn't it funny how you can go to the doctor and easily get a prescription for an endless amount of drugs that can lead to organ damage/failure or even death, yet the authorities are having a hissy fit over some k2 herb fake weed stuff. Okay, not funny. Infuriating. They waste so much time and money chasing stuff like this down. They are only adding to the huge overcrowding problem we currently have in American prisons. K2 incense has survived every ban thus far and you can still buy buy k2 smoke products that aren't restricted by ANY current ban, so really, what exactly are they trying to achieve here???

  17. I've smoked real shit and then converted to this because of family issues, but anyways, most of the spice shit is bogus, UNLESS you look around and experiment. The two worst i came across was Red Dragon(2nd best) but this has side effects.. and the absolute best I've done is called Black widow.. by far is crazy. For experienced smokers only, and becareful your first time, go easy. It's literally worse than smoking a 3g regular mid blunt to your head on one hit.

  18. ive been a pot smoker for years and recently found out about the spice ive tried a few diffrent types like red dragon and black widow and ive found out that the more red hairs that are in it the higher you get where im from in louisville kentucky more people are smoking spice than pot because of the quanity you get and the easier it is found i prefer the black widow it does have a maryjuanna high to it but if you smoke alot of it like more than a few bowls you will have a intense trip like if you were on acid so im not sure about abuseing it what it would do to you because i always quit smoking it when i start to feel buzzed but ithink it is a great drug and that is should stay legal and wheere im from you have to be 18 to purchase it

  19. I smoke weed occasionally and I tried black widow spice for the first time last week. My friend and I shared a blunt. Bad idea. I thought I was dying. It was the worst experience of my life. My friend and I started convulsing on the ground. He tried to sleep it off but I got really sick and vommed everywhere. Extreme nausea. Horrible trip. I felt like I was suffocating. I'm not even an anti-drug person but that stuff was rough. I recommend staying "all-natural."

  20. Smoked spice about a year ago, probably one of the scariest trips I've had. Extreme paranoia, blacked out at one point, nothing fun or relaxing about it. I felt like I was wired. Apparently they're finding out now that spice is quite bad for your health due to the synthesised chemicals, and my school that drug tests for MJ, cocaine, ect. is now drug testing for spice, which is a huge discouragement. I do not recommend spice unless you're looking to get fucked in the head.

  21. I smoke the 4.20 gram, spirit herbal incense. I haven't smoked weed in over a year do to my circumstances. I am curious what its composed of and if it shows up in a drug test. I enjoy it very much but have mixed opinions on it as I prefer the real stuff. if anyone has any info on it that would be awesome.

My husband was a long time pot smoker but because of work had to give it up.he has started smoking Black Widow and he is more addicted to that than he ever was with pot.i know it's up to the individual how much you smoke but he can't help himself he's addicted to it,so be aware of this before you replace your marijuana habits with these synthetic drugs
